Do you consign? Its a great way to earn a little extra cash and to clean out your closets and playroom.
I am participating a third year in the Rhea Lana North Atlanta Sale. Its a great sale for me, advertised with good traffic. When I first started consigning I was overwhelmed, but now I have my prep down to a science. Plus they tell you what you need to do!
For the Rhea Lana Sale, to tag your items you need safety pins, string hang tags and plastic hangers. All sales are different and have the requirements for your clothes tagging supplies.
I go to mini-me’s closet and pull out all items that no longer fit and pile them up for inspection. I look CLOSELY at everything – if it has the least bit of a stain, it goes to Goodwill pile. If its something I would be comfortable buying, I put it on a hanger and safety pin a tag to it so it will not fall off the hanger.
Farewell Hannas, Gymbos, Carters and all. You served us well….off to a new home. |
After I have everything ready, I bring the laptop in and put it on my ironing board and do my item data entry. The Rhea Lana sale has REAL TIME sales info, so you can see during the sale what is selling. This is GREAT info for next sale as I can see if I overpriced anything and what sold for 1/2 price the last 2 days of sale. I typically price to sell at 25% of what I paid for something as this has paid off for me. My goal is to get NOTHING to half price of course!
Don’t let the Data Entry scare you, really its easier than writing up all the tags. They have drop down choices for description so it goes fast. You add description, Size, Price and if you want to pick up the item at the end of the sale or donate it. You also designate if its OK to offer your items for 1/2 price the last 2 days of the sale….I always do.
Each Item gets a number for you to write that number on the hang tag. The sale prints out labels for you to stick on your price tag with a bar code which they scan at the sale so you can see what has sold while the sale goes on.
My favorite moment, lugging it out the door and loading up the van! Farewell Tom’s red corduroy shoes! |
Check in at the sale is a breeze. A volunteer inspects each item to make sure its not stained or out of season. When complete you get your price tags, stick them on and go hang up your stuff on the appropriate rack to stock the sale. Mini me loved being my helper this time, made it fun.
Farewell Hanna Anderson reversible sweater with matching tights for $6. Yeah we wore the sweater I think 3 times. |
This might sound like it takes a while, but it goes by pretty fast and you can walk around and look at the goods. Volunteers and Consignors get early admission to the sale, so they get first dibs.
AND THEN…the sale starts and you stalk your computer and watch your sales add up.
Sales take their cut as a percentage of the sales price. They also charge a nominal consignor fee.
Each sale is a treasure hunt as you never know WHAT people will offer. They are great to find baby gear for your babysitter or grandma. I shop the sale and always find something at a bargain. Mini me took her own money this time to pick out a toy for herself.
Obermeyer Ski Suit..ADORABLE…just a tad small WAH! |
While I won’t get rich, my earnings from sales will help out with back to school shopping fund or the Disney Race fund. I estimate this sale, I put in about 4 hours total for the 53 items I offered.
Today is the last day of the sale and there are 3 of my items yet to be sold. I love that I can see what has sold – lots this time AND what went for half price – not much, I did well. Of course there is ALWAYS the one item that I wonder “why didn’t this sell?” Oh and the cute Hanna Sweater with the matching tights……it went for half price…someone got a steal!
For my local friends, Sarah who runs the sale I participate in is starting a Rhea Lana East Cobb in September. Start getting your items together and check out her FACEBOOK PAGE! She puts on a good sale!
My advice for consigning…ask your friends if the sale is a “good one”. Does it get heavily advertised and have traffic? Have friends had success selling? What is the reputation of the merchandise? Read the guidelines for prepping your items and pricing and PRICE TO SELL.
So will you be consigning this fall? Will you be shopping any consignment sales?

That’s a great thing to do with kids clothes. I don’t have any little ones, but I definitely make use of ebay when I have items that are looking for a new place to live.

i have son to a few and love it but i sell most of the kids clothes on Facebook yard sale sites

I used to do Ebay….but had a couple bad experiences. I love the sales because people can see what they are buying with no expectations it will be perfect. I need to try some FB pages though too when I don’t have alot of stuff! Thanks Nicole.

Ha ha…. I think I overbought at some great sales a few years ago. I actually missed the Fall Sale last year so this is 2+ years worth of stuff. I had things from size 4 to 8! Yeah, mini me had a CRAZY growth spurt this year.
Amy Albers says
YES! You inspired me! I’ve got a bazillion clothes from the big boys that need to go – and games, and toys…. I can’t wait to see this stuff go! (And some cash flow in!)
Julie Franklin says
Go Amy Go. Remember the point is to get it out of the house and maybe earn some coin. Price it to sell.
