To know me, is to know I love Sting. If you don’t know this, the story of my life long love affair with this milkman’s son is here. Read all about it!
I was greeted this morning to Sting on the Today Show – yeah, its a good week for me musically to say the least!
Sting is promoting his newest album “The Last Ship”; the score for a Broadway musical that is currently being developed and will debut in Chicago next summer before it hits the Great White Way in the Fall of 2014.
About the The Last Ship show From Sting.com:
Life in the English seafaring town of Wallsend has always revolved around the local shipyard, where the hardworking men of this close-knit community construct magnificent vessels with tremendous pride. But Gideon Fletcher dreams of a different future. He sets out to travel the world, leaving his life and his love behind. When Gideon returns home fourteen years later, he finds the shipyard’s future in grave danger and his childhood sweetheart engaged to someone else. As the men of Wallsend take their fate into their own hands and build a towering representation of the shared dream that has defined their existence, Gideon realizes that he left behind more than he could have ever imagined.
Sting was born in Sting was born in Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK. His destiny did not lie in ship building, and yet the memories of growing up in this blue collar industrial town inspired him.
“The memories at the heart of THE LAST SHIP have occupied my mind for most of my life,” said Sting. “I was compelled to tell this story, and I’ve had the great fortune of collaborating with an enormously talented team.” – from Sting.com
Sting briefly talked about the show and his writing the music. He then performed the energetic Celtic sounding song “What Have We Got”. His performance did NOT disappoint – I was tapping my toes and wanted to get up and dance. It was great to see guitarist Dominic Miller who is often on the road with Sting and plays a mean guitar too.
Shortly after the performance, I found myself on iTunes …..and yeah, of course this download happened.
The Last Ship is really an amazing display of Sting’s artistry. If you are looking for Roxanne or the police hard Police rocking songs…..this is not that. If you are a fan of Dream of the Blue Turtles or Ten Summoner’s tales – or just a fan of Broadway music, you must check this out. From the jazzy “And Yet” to the acoustic and simple “August Winds” to the makes you want to jig “What Have We Got” – there is something for everyone. The ballads are just beautiful and haunting. The variety of styles in these songs showcase the passion and talent that is Sting’s music. On Today, he said he had been in songwriting block and when he decided to write music about something other than himself, these songs flowed out of him rather quickly. His voice ads to all the songs, which will be sung by different characters in the show. Its amazing how he captured the mood so beautifully in each song.
Seeing him today reminded me of the best date and night of my life earlier this year – you can read about it here – when Mr RWFR and I saw Sting at a special event Final Four Weekend. It was a smaller venue and we were SO close. Mr RWFR took this video shortly into the first song when I was freaking out at how close we were to Sting. Please pardon the profanity…..really, I was in shock at how close we were – its been my dream to see Sting up close. I can check it off my bucket list!
You can download and preview Sting’s The Last Ship at iTunes.com. Go give your ears a treat and take a listen. For updates on the show, follow Sting on Twitter @officialsting. His guitarist Dominic Miller is pretty cool too and you can follow him at @Dominicmiller1.
Sting just keeps on getting better. Thanks for all the years of fabulous music that lifts my spirits. Can’t wait to see The Last Ship, maybe it will be the first show I see on Broadway!
Is there an artist that you have loved since your youth you still follow with a passion? Love to hear it.

That concert was at the Tabernacle in Downtown ATL. It was a special invite only event…..AMAZING during Final Four weekend.

Sting is choosing Chicago over NYC for a reason and you should respect his wishes and see the show there! I am a little partial, but I’ll take the 2nd City any day!! 🙂

I’ll be honest, not such a big fan of sting, really the only music I listen to these days are the wiggles! Thanks for sharing

Well you know I’m with you on Sting. I’m definitely going to have to give this a listen too. Dream of the Blue Turtles and his live Bring on the Night are still my faves. I’ve also been listening to Def Leppard and U2 for about as long. Old habits die hard 😉
