Sean Astin: Vox Populi – The Voice of the Occasionally Interested People

October 8, 2013 by Julie @RunWalkRepeat

One of my favorite Georgia Tech shirts; custom made by some fun fans:

The back says “Go GT, Beat ND”  watch the movie, you will get it.

Everyone loves “Rudy”,  even us Georgia Tech fans.  Actor/Director Sean Astin’s portrayal of the tenacious underdog Rudy whose dream was to go to Notre Dame and play football was inspiring.  Astin began acting at age 10 and has been in other hits such as the 80’s classic “The Goonies” and as Samwise Gamgee the Hobbit in “Lord of the Rings”.

He is a Father, a Husband, Activist, Runner and like me, a runDisney enthusiast.  Hey he wore a friend’s tiara at the 2013 Princess Half!  Anyone who has met him will tell you he is one of the nice guys in Hollywood. He gave my running group a pre-race pep talk at the Princess half.  He truly cares about others as the founder of RUN3rd – a group whose motto is “I Run For You”

He also produces and hosts political podcast “Vox Populi: Voice of the Occasionally Interested People”.   Vox Populi is latin for Voice of the People.

He started a crowd funding effort to raise $30,000 from Kickstarter to take Vox Populi to the next level.  He is 66% there!

The weekly radio show matches guests with opposing viewpoints while Sean guides them through civil discussions.  Astin explains the show and campaign here.

Last week, I went to run at my favorite nature trail and came up to a blocked empty parking lot and sign. #Shutdown. Its sad to me things have come to this.

Its hard for me to imagine and process the lack of communication by our leaders in our government shutdown. Vox Populi is an example of how the lines of communication can be opened.  I think what Astin is trying to accomplish is very important and inspired.

To support Sean Astin’s efforts and the campaign #StartTheVox, go here.

You can follow Astin on Twitter @SeanAstin and the campaign using #StartTheVox.

You can also follow along on Facebook on his page here.

So tell me what you think?  Would you be interested in listening to Vox Populi?

I haven’t listened to it yet. But I am curious about it. Love the fact that it is bipartisan with no agenda other than communication. Sean is a big hit in this house, between Oso, TMNT, Lord of the Rings, Goonies and of course the runDisney connection. I hope he is able to meet his goals.

Thanks Patty, I know Sean is very active in the political arena….but I think no matter what your affiliation, belief, whatever…..its great he is trying to just get people talking again!

I have listened to it! It was a great show- and Sean is crazy smart and respectful. We don’t agree on things at all politically, but I loved the discourse. Thanks for sharing Julie- I think I’m going to write something up to share about Sean’s project too!

Welcome!
