Disclosure: I was offered Race Entries for a Giveaway from The Color Run in exchange for Color Run write up on my blog. Please know, ALL opinions stated below are my own, or from Color Run veteran participant Tracie who paid entry for her past races.
2012 Color Run Atlanta, Team wii not fit |
Do you like to have fun at races? Are you the type who could care less about the speed you finish but enjoy the journey of the course – hello, that is so me! Do you like being transformed during races? Have you considered participating in the Color Run? Well if not, I have the scoop on The Color Run Race for you. Founded in 2012, The Color Run was established to promote healthiness and happiness bringing people together to enjoy the “Happiest 5k on the Planet”. And The Color Run is coming to a town near you:
The 2014 Kaleidescope Tour of The Color Run kicks off January 25, with events all over the United States, check it out here.
Atlanta 2012 Color Run, “Team wii Not Fit” |
The premise of The Color Run is simple:
- Wear white at the start.
- Finish your race plastered in color.
After the untimed race is Finish Festival complete with music, dancing and “massive color throws”.
I have not completed a race, but asked my running friend Tracie about her past Color Runs. She has run the past 2 races here in Atlanta and so graciously agreed to let me her experience and thoughts on this racing event.
Tracie: I’ve been color bombed selfie! |
In 2012 she ran with a group of friends in “Team wii Not Fit”, and in 2013 she ran with her 7 year old son, along with dear friend who ran with their 5 year old son.
Training:
A runner, she did nothing different extra in 2012 to run with Team wii Not Fit, it appears that was about fun with friends. In 2013, to prepare her son, she started about a month before the race twice a week doing intervals. They would run 1 minute walking then 1 minute running for 2 miles on a path near her home. She knew he would want to run the race, so she through this would be a good way to get some stamina. He did great!

Running with a Friend:
Tracie’s friend had been seeing all her running updates on Facebook and admitted to Tracie she wanted to try a 5k with her. Tracie thought an untimed race with such a fun theme would be perfect, and her friend did great!

The Race Itself in Tracie’s own words:
“The race was run very well and was very well organized. There were 2 assigned start waves. One was at 9:00 and the other at 10:00. Parking was wonderful! Volunteers waving us in to park, and we pulled right up and walked to the starting line. No problems at all. We were scared that it would be a nightmare with 24,000 runners, so we got there early.:
Starting Waves:
“We jumped in and ended up running the 9:00 wave vs. the 10:00 and it didn’t really matter. I think they organized it that way on purpose, knowing that it would be staggered regardless. Our “wave” actually left around 9:40 and there were still people leaving the start at 10:45 when we were leaving the parking lot.”

The Color Stations:
“They had color stations at every kilometer. The 1st Kilometer was blue, 2nd orange, 3rd pink, 4th yellow and at the finish each runner had a packet of their own color to toss in the air. At each station, they had balloon arches of that color with volunteers “squirting” us with color from big industrial sized ketchup bottles. The volunteers were plentiful and there was plenty of color to go around.”
The Atlanta Course:
“The course went around the speedway, some of it was paved walkways and the other part was packed gravel. Easy and flat. They had 1 water station at around mile 1.5. “

Final Thoughts:
“I would definitely do this race again! It is so much fun to do with your family. It is also a great race to sign up for a first race…very low key and super fun! Lots of music, very colorful, and you can walk or run…it is really for everyone. If you want to run it seriously, I would be at the very beginning, but not really a ‘runner’s race’. Great way to spend a beautiful spring day in Atlanta! No changes should be made in my opinion.”
There you have it! Great photos too if you like photos while racing cuz you know I do!
