Disclosure: I was provided a JWalking Designs skirt at no cost to me for review. All opinions stated are my own.
As a woman of a certain age and well size, I am NOT comfortable with just wearing shorts when I run. And truth be told, I like looking cute, OK at least decent because I sweat – lots, and get all red faced.
I came across J Walking Designs Skirts on Twitter and was intrigued…. #FitFunctionFashionable skirts.

“We want women of all shapes and sizes to have the self-confidence to get out and get active. And that is the mission of JWalking Designs.” Oh I LOVED this by the way!
From the J Walking Designs Web Site:
FUNCTION: Three pockets provide ample space for you to carry everything from cash and keys, to phone and food. If you need it on a race, it’ll have its place.
FASHION: Who here wants to look sleek and stylish everywhere from the gym to the grocery store? Yeah hi – um, we all do! Our skirts transition from work out to go out, and trust us, you’ll stand out!
I got my skirt and was impressed, it was VERY well constructed. Light weight too. The one thing that concerned me was the elastic in the waist band being too thick like it would be uncomfortable. Tried it on, NOT a problem at all.
My first wear was for the runDisney Enchanted 10k Princess Half Weekend as the bottom half of my Mary Poppins attire. Really fit the bill. Race conditions were extremely hot and humid race and I was drenched, but my skirt NEVER felt heavy or uncomfortable.

The 3 pockets came in handy for my extra hydration powder and phone. The zippers kept things secure and the one without the zipper has Velcro to keep things in their place. I loved not worrying about things falling out on my potty stop. Also, I never felt the waist or the skirt length creeping up or dropping down it stayed in place. The length of the skirt was perfect, my BRF noticed that it was not too short or too long and the shorts stayed hidden for the most part. LOVED that. I was extremely pleased with the wear of this skirt out of the gate.
Here’s a BIG disclosure with the first wear, I work biker shorts under the skirt ONLY because I was participating in the Glass Slipper Challenge and running the Princess Half the next day. I just did NOT want to risk chafing knowing I had another humid hot 13.1 miles the next day.

Since returning I have run several times up to 4 miles wearing my JWalking Designs skirt. Stays in place and comfy, however I will say the shorts did ride up a little. I wish there was a little something extra on the leg hem to keep them down. I did NOT chafe though. I ran both outside in my hilly neighborhood and on the treadmill wearing my skirt. I would wear this again with no extra undershorts for my shorter training runs. Because I LOVE the pockets, I would wear for a 10k again in but would be very generous with the body glide – or wear extra shorts depending on the heat and humidity. I really think for errands and such the shorts are not an issue at all for me.
I LOVED the roominess of the pockets. I think this skirt would be GREAT for travel to. Its light weight and has pockets so you don’t HAVE to take a purse. I actually wore it backwards a couple times to see how that would be if I wanted the pocket in the front of my waist not the back. It was fine. Definitely wearing on my next trip to Disney Parks to tour the parks.
To sum it up:
PROs:
Nice flattering style for most figures, certainly for my curves and extra lbs.
Lightweight
Comfortable
Lots of Room in Pockets
Pockets Zip or Velcro Shut
Length – long without getting in the way
Made In USA
ECO Friendly
CONs:
Shorts Rose Up on Me.
Limited Color Availability
Would I buy this skirt? ABSOLUTELY. Its great for exercise and for wearing around on errands or on vacation. I love running in skirts, but I have a strict NO RIDE policy so I don’t know if I could go for these…I guess I’d have to try them on a short run first.
Rebecca Jo says
Very nice! The more up the hill I get in my 40’s the more I don’t want shorts riding up for everyone to see. Give me running skirts every time!

Great review. I only own one running skirt and I have only worn it twice in the 3 years I have had it. I like it, but I just don’t think a running skirt is “me.” It does look like a great skirt though for those who like to run in skirts!

Great review! Although my heart belongs to Sparkle Skirts, I’ll have to check these out!
Julie Franklin says
you know I LOVE my sparkle skirts, but I think variety is good! VERY happy find too.

I do wear skirts but mostly for races. I do like the sounds of this one, and love the ideas of the pockets being zippered and velcroed. I always worry about things falling out of the pockets.
Julie Franklin says
Especially in a dark port o pottie! EWWWWWW LOL. I love the look of racing skirts and well just for running around too.

So I think you’re a big fan of SparkleSkirts too right? How do they compare do you think? Other than the shorts issue —
I’m gonna go have a look since right now I wear mostly Target Champion and those shorts have NOTHING holding them down so I imagine these might work out a little better.
Julie Franklin says
The Target Champion skirts are OK, but not near as well constructed as these I think and those pockets on the skirts I have WORTHLESS – and I ALWAYS have to wear my biker shorts under those cuz the shorts are super short. I am a huge fan of SparkleSkirts, they def have more variety of prints and fabrics. The cut of the swing sparkle skirt is more full and flowing, these are more straight cut and I think would look great on most everyone too and its a nice change for me . This skirt seems longer that the Sparkle Skirts when I wore it and my shorts didn’t peak out that I noticed. The waist in these is a thicker band of elastic which I thought would bother me, but nope, not at all and it was SO supportive, never slipped down. On this skirt when I went in the bathroom it was SO nice to not worry about pockets when going potty since they all close. I think its a GREAT skirt .
