Ariel is kind of a big deal in our house. As Mini Me’s favorite princess, she has shown me for years to not be afraid to be myself, be true to yourself, and to enjoy exploration and new things. Its hard for me to believe this movie is 25 years old! I first watched the film with my preschool niece, now married to her own prince. After first seeing it, I would drive around with my Radio Shack after market car tape deck blaring “A Part of Your World” and “Under the Sea”. I remember talking with my sister how the music was timeless and should be on stage as it sounded like Broadway.
When Mini Me was old enough to watch DVD’s, we watched the Little Mermaid again and again. She was declared the favorite among all the ladies. We were excited when the ride Voyage of the Little Mermaid opened at Disney Parks on both coasts and its still a must do ride for our family to side through the story and enjoy the music as we relive the story.
Walt Disney Records released The Legacy Collection of the Little Mermaid in November through a new Disney Music Website Disney Music Emporium: a destination for Disney music fans with collectible Disney music products, monthly columns by guest writers, a News, Disney facts plus exclusive videos.
The Legacy Collection soundtrack of the Little Mermaid comes in a cool jacket with the story of the music and complete Lyrics. Mini Me has been carrying the jacket around because she likes seeing the words to the songs. The collection is a two disc set, one of the complete score and songs from the beloved film and one with the extras. One of my favorite parts of the film “Saving Mr Banks” was watching the Sherman Brothers creative process for Mary Poppins, so it was fun with the extras to hear demos on The Little Mermaid legacy collection performed by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman in that same vein. Not being in the movie business but enjoying music, its fun to read about and hear the process in the works for this classic score.
We had a play date yesterday and I put on the CD which inspired dancing, singing and the creation of a set for a family room version of The Little Mermaid by my daughter. How fun this music is bringing out my daughter’s creative side as she created artwork with her friend for the show and staging of this wonderful story.
I love the music for nostalgia and well because they are great songs and you know, I like to run to show tunes too. Sometimes a nice musical score helps pass the miles with a smile on my face.
