Why I am Running Glass Slipper Challenge For Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals

July 17, 2015 by Julie @RunWalkRepeat

I was able to avoid the crazy mad rush for Princess Half Marathon sign-up this year as I per-registered to join the team running for charity. Yep I am running to fund raise and help  make some miracles. The Enchanted 10k, Half Marathon and Glass Slipper Challenge sold out the day registration opened up this week, so I am happy I am in and running for something bigger than myself – Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Children's Miracle Network Hospitals

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals® is the presenting sponsor and celebratory charity of the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend.  Funds raised for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in conjunction with this magical event will help kids grow up happily ever after.

Right now there’s a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital working to save the lives of kids in your community.  In fact, 62 children enter a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital for treatment every minute – that’s one child every second. Some are battling cancer. Some are suffering from a traumatic injury. Others require constant care because they were born too early or with a genetic disease. Regardless of why kids are there, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals always have their doors open.

Why I am running with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals?  My son Caleb.

Caleb NICU

Caleb was born 16 weeks premature and lived 9 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with an excellent team of pediatric doctors and nurses who so lovingly cared for him. His medical team prepared us for his needs including potential future surgeries at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta(CHOA) for issues associated with his extreme preterm birth.  Knowing CHOA was there helped with our hope for our son and we were thankful to have a local children’s hospital equipped to handle our son’s medical needs AND our quite frankly be able to deal with us parents. Caleb never recovered from a double brain hemorrhage and never made the trip to Children’s. His short life deeply affected our family – including running in his memory.

Caleb Since our loss, I have met moms with a similar birth story and many with happier outcomes than ours thanks to children’s hospitals. Children born premature who thrived with the assistance of the staff and facilities of their Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Along with excellent care, these facilities give parents hope and quite often a knowing shoulder to cry on when things get tough and they just need to let it out.

I have witnessed families fighting pediatric cancers, grateful to the facilities and staff equipped to focus on getting sick kids healthy again and who know the struggles of the families as they make the hospital a less scary place in the saddest of circumstances.

The need to support these hospitals is GREAT as you can see below.
