Know what my favorite album was when I was a kid?
Oh yes, its a 70’s LP! |
I used to sing along to these songs in pretend microphones as if I had my own TV variety hour. The basement was the studio, friends family and neighbors were the audience and guest stars. The upright vacuum cleaner handle was my stand up mic and the electric cord on the vacuum served as the corded mic, you know so I could sing, walk and work the room.
A recording exists of me age 7 or so singing Gypsies Tramps and Thieves….truth be told I hummed most of it. Hearing me sing “but at night all the men would come around and lay their money down….”, still cracks me and the family up. And yes, I had NO idea what the song was about; I just LOVED Cher – because she was FABULOUS. Still is in my humble opinion.
I grew up with her larger than life persona….her music and TV shows with and without Sonny, her movies, and her comebacks. Though really people, she never goes anywhere. When I finally saw her in person on her Farewell tour, it was an amazing showcase of her talent as a singer, comic, stage presence and well being just the STILL fabulous Diva she is. She has won Grammys, Emmys, Golden Globes and the Oscar. And when she has a misstep, hey it happens, she brushes it off and moves on. LOVE her resilience. Ever wonder where Cher gets all her FABULOUS-NESS from? Apparently, it is in her genes.
It was with GREAT excitement I agreed to review the DVD Dear Mom Love Cher from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.
Dear Mom, Love Cher is a revealing look at one of the most iconic artists of our time, and the mother that raised her. Available September 24th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment, its the true story of Cher’s life and her close relationship with her family, including her mother Georgia Holt. Along with the unique access to family footage, this exclusive DVD release includes a special birthday video from Cher to her mother. The DVD is timed to coincide with the release of Cher’s highly anticipated, new solo album, also out on September 24.
This film is a rare peek into Cher’s fascinating family history along with interviews with her family – her mom Georgia, Sister Georganne LaPiere Bartylak and children Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman.

Cher’s mom Georgia Holt arrived in Hollywood with a dream to be a singer and actress, from self proclaimed “white trash” background. She likens her childhood to that of the little girl Addy in the movie “Paper Moon”, though her daddy was pushing her singing talents not bibles as they traveled. She was pretty good too, as at one gig, her pants were falling down from the weight of the coin in her pockets – and this is during the depression when NO one had money to spare.
Their family story is am amazing testament of strength, endurance and well everyday family conflicts. Through the intimate setting of Cher’s Pacific Coast villa, I felt as though I were in the room on the couch when Cher, Georgia and Georganne laughed as they remembered their family story and history. Here’s a preview clip:
AND another…..
From the Great Depression, Big Band Era to the 70’s and today, its a fun look at history through one family’s photos and memories. I have to say it was VERY fun to watch the stories being told, there was lots of laughter. Seeing the pictures and films was a walk down memory lane for anyone who grew up with Cher.
Cher starts the film saying she is like a bumper car: she runs into something, backs up and moves in another direction. Here sister ends the film with “that’s what the women in my family are like, cats with nine lives – we just keep coming back”. I totally see now where Cher got her FABULOUS-ness and her strength and resilience – her mom is one amazing lady.
The film features a never-before-heard duet performance with Holt and Cher, along with the long-lost recordings Holt taped more than three decades ago that Cher has re-mastered for commercial release later this year, making her mother’s lifelong dream a reality. Her mom still has “It” and as Chaz proclaimed is one Hot lady. Georgia and Cher have very similar voices and it was a joy to see Georgia singing and sounding amazing at the age of 86.
I cannot wait to share this with MY sister – and think its a great one to watch with your mom. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this and think you will too. So happy add this to my DVD collection. I know I will enjoy it over and over.

Cher was such a large part of my early childhood and a shared love for Cher conjures up some of my favorite memories of time spent with my Mom, when we were both so young. I went to school in my Mom’s burgundy ultra-suede, feather starburst at the chest, jagged hem dress, spaghetti straps safety pinned together at the back to hold it on, for Career Day in what I think was the 2nd or 3rd grade. The school called my Mom because they thought I was dressed as if I had chosen the oldest profession.

Bwahahahahaha. That is quite the story. Cher really empowered us 70’s kids to have some style and that flamboyance was OK. I think about watching the show with my mom and sisters. She is a cool lady….always has been.
