One of my favorite gifts this holiday season…my Mickey “If You Can Dream It, You Can Do it” Tervis Tumbler. This is one of my FAVORITE Quotes from Walt Disney! My family knows me so well!
Next year is a big birthday year for me…..and well the seed of “lets go for a full Marathon” had been planted in my brain. SERIOUSLY I am the person who has said “I will never do a full marathon”, mainly because I am slow and it will take me a while to finish 26.2 miles.
But never say never. The DisBroads announced today some will be going for 26.2 miles. Somehow, something clicked as we were talking about this and I decided I COULD be the person to try to finish a full marathon – so I am one of them that is going for it. I will never know if I can finish one unless I try…. so try I will in 2015.
Of course I will sign up for the runDisney Full Marathon. Its relatively flat and what other race can you ride a roller coaster mid race…..they let the runners go in single rider line for Everest. I will SO give up all my character photos to accomplish this.
Luckily I have a year to prepare and the support of my DisBroad friends who will be running the race too. I KNOW I just can’t dream it and do it, it will take work….HARD work. In my prep, I need to work on things like healthy eating and dropping some of the extra pounds I am carrying around.
SO 2014 is my year to prepare to run a full marathon at Disney. I am scared, but oh so excited.
Thanks Walt for reminding me a dream is achievable.
Who here has run a full marathon? Got any tips for my training?

That is so exciting and scary! And you crazy ladies have got me actually considering the 2015 WDW full which I said I’d never do. I’m not as scared of the race as I am of 20 mile training runs! I’ll keep an eye on your progress and hopefully I’ll get brave enough to sign up too!

Congratulations and best of luck! I ran my first full in January at WDW as part of Goofy. Originally, I was supposed to have done my first full in New York City and then do Goofy, but the NYCM was canceled that year.
I don’t recommend doing your first full as part of Goofy, but live and learn! I survived and it was a great experience (even if the weather conditions were the worst of that marathon’s 20 year history). I met some amazing friends that trip and I’m glad I did it!
I learned that recovery is just as important as training. If your body needs an extra day of rest, then take it. I didn’t train as hard as I should have the last month and a half because of the holidays and work, but I still got in several 10-12 mile runs in December and that kept me somewhat ready. A marathon is not about speed, so if you need to slow down, don’t pressure yourself to be speedy.
Best of luck, you have plenty of time to be more than prepared!

Wow thanks so much Jaime for your words of wisdom. I am nervous but i KNOW I have to stick to a training plan. Appreciate your response….lots of GREAT advice.

I’ve done four full marathons, the most recent for my 40th birthday. The training is the hardest part because you have to really stick to a plan, and the amount of time you need to allow for it gets progressively longer. My worst mistakes came with my fourth marathon because I took the advice of CrossFit trainers on how to eat and train. That was a huge error. I should have stuck with the generally accepted running advice that has gotten people through marathons for years and years.
As far as advice to you goes, just set your mind to it and stick with a plan. Once you get into longer distances, say 15+, you may find that your miles per minute slow down and that you need to really focus on recovery. Listen to your body. You’ll be fine!

Thanks so much Jennifer! You are always so supportive. GREAT advice. I am scared, but with support from friends like you…I know I can do it!

Yay! So excited for you to take this big step and for me to be there with you! It’s my first full too!

I don’t think without the support of friends like you I could take this on. SO excited!
