You know I don’t feel like an old lady since the big birthday. Yet I do realize I am getting older which I don’t dwell on, but you know, its there. Yesterday as part of my Team In Training plan, I had a three mile training run. Little did I realize the run would end with “I’ve Fallen and I CAN Get Up”.
The run STARTED OK. I decided to head to my favorite packed gravel trail by the river, its an easy 3 mile loop. It was a gorgeous fall day and warm, but not too hot. I love this trail its my happy place.
My 3 miles was run at 1 minute run, 45 second walk intervals. Into the first mile, I decided I do NOT like this set of intervals – I will be shortening the run interval next run. I felt sluggish and just was not into the run at all, but decided I would trudge on and the last mile push it. Bad call, training called for me to have a moderately easy run, hello that does not include pushing it. I as so happy when my Garmin beeped signalling mile 2. At 2.72 miles into my run, I tripped on something. I had one of those felt like I was going in slow motion…
“Oh No, Am I Going to Fall???” I took three steps to try to steady myself as I went down and realized, “Yep, Its happening”. Down I went on my left side, natural instinct, I put my hands down to break my fall. I went down on my left side, rolled and ended up on my back. For a split second I thought “Do I need Life Alert?”
On my back I saw runners and walkers behind me in the not far distance, so I stood up and waved and shouted “I’m OK”. I picked up my hand water bottle and decided to just walk the rest of the way to my car. A sweet mom pushing her son in the jogging stroller stopped by me and said are you sure you are OK. Yep, just a scraped up knee and well today my left wrist is sore.
I walked in irritation at myself for falling. While I am no FloJo, I was pushing myself and I think I just tripped on my feet. I was lucky I didn’t hurt myself. Then I saw a sign. On the side of the path this guy was looking right at me.
So I finished my run enjoying the shady scenery and while NOT the finish I had hoped, I got it done. I was very happy about that. And MAJOR props to my new earphones I purchased myself, Yurbuds Inspire Sport Earphones Earbuds (here’s that Affiliate link). The did NOT fall out when I fell. My water bottle ended up about 2 feet in front of me, but those Yurbuds stayed in my ears. I am thrilled as I have had a dickens of a time trying many earphones that didn’t stay in when I ran, so you looking for some earphones, give them a try as I have been blown away how well they stay in my sweaty ears.
I was walking to my car doing some stretching when I noticed the gorgeous flowers at the start of the trail. Fall is in the air, pretty weed aren’t they?
I got in my car happy I didn’t hurt myself. Remember when I told you how serious falls can be, yeah that thought crossed my mind. I was glad I was able to get through my disappointment in myself with not making my goal time and in NOT following my plan. I also was thankful I was able to get up and move on, which is really what life is about. When you fall, you deal and move on. For those who have said to me “you are such a strong person”, here is my secret:
Have you ever fallen when you ran? A friend of mine did and broke her wrist, you ever been hurt in a fall?

My greatest fear is falling during a run. I’m so afraid that I would break something. Thank you for reminding me that just because you fall…doesnt mean you cant get up.
Love the turtle…lol
Cheers and glad your OK!

I have fallen once before, training run and was on a yard, stretch of neighborhood with no sidewalks and avoiding a car. Yeah, don’t go there anymore! I am so paranoid about those reflectors at races on the road. And the turtle…what a GREAT reminder to me.

First off – glad you are okay! I’ve wiped out a few times – and always on paved roads. Never anything worse than a little road rash. I’ve been lucky. It’s funny because most runners fall down on off-road trails: trip over a root, lose their footing on gravel, etc. I run 95% of the time off-road and while I stumble, I’ve never fallen down.

Its only the second time I have fallen. Funny story, my boob on the left is bruised, I think it broke the fall LOL. The gravel on this path is packed so who knows what happened…its wide and where I was I can’t imagine I didn’t see a root, I think I just got clumsy. I am SO happy my wrist is not broken too.

Glad this wasn’t too serious. I’ve never fell on a run ( almost tripped a few times) but I had fallen off my bike and wiped out on the trail and had an elderly couple walking by insist they needed to call for help (because they had a cell phone ya know. They were so proud of having a cell phone. They were probably just waiting for a situation where they could say “they had a cell phone”..haha). Your story reminded me of something sue Heck would do ( from the TV show the middle)

Man I rolled too in that fall. Kudos to my Yurbuds LOL. My friend who broke her wrist, she was running while out of town and was sitting on the curb crying when a nice couple drove her to the hospital…. #Theydidnthaveacellphone. 🙂 Bike wipeouts really scare me. Glad your caregivers had a cell phone. 🙂

I haven’t fallen while running. Yet. Because I’m a complete klutz and my day will come.
I have fallen down the stairs a few times. And once I slipped on something and fell on the kitchen floor. The only thing hurt was my pride.
Glad you’re ok. Be careful!

I will, I am like WHAT HAPPENED…..but hey, I am OK. I really keep my eyes peeled on the trail becuase of peoples dogs and some who choose not to clean up afterwards.

I have, shockingly (at least my mom would say so!) *not* fallen while running. Walking? yes. Standing still? possibly… I will confess that there may have possibly maybe been adult beverages involved…
I have a great fear of falling during a run though so I will only push when it’s flat and clear. Actually, I have a fear of falling period.
Glad you’re okay!!

I have fainted twice, in crowds, so not a fan of those. The other time I fell I did trip on a root. Sigh. I am so paranoid at races f the deflector thingies.

So glad that you’re okay, Julie! I’m a klutzy person by nature but I haven’t actually fallen during a run. Yet. I know it’s just a matter of time. 😉
ALSO, HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!

Mer this is only the second time I have fallen in 5 years, so not bad I suppose. Really I need to stick with my plan, I only have myself to blame. Thanks for the birthday wishes!
