Growing up on the east coast of the US, we spent many family vacations on the shores of the Atlantic in Florida. It’s cool to think I spent my summers enjoying the same beach my dad did when he was a boy! The Original American Beach, popular Daytona Beach enjoyed by generations of my family is worth considering for your family vacation.
Daytona Beach offers a wide variety of kid friendly options and activities along with so many dining options and 23 miles of sparkling white sand – the world famous beach you can drive along. When I was young, this was something we HAD to do and see as you can’t drive along most beaches. No matter your family’s budget or travel style, whether you prefer hotels, motels, condo rentals, bed and breakfasts inns and campground, Daytona Beach has something for EVERYONE and is great for couples too. And for the seriously limited budget, no shortage of free things to do in Daytona Beach.
For me there is nothing more enjoyable than sitting on the beach with the breeze and sights of the ocean. I can sit on the beach all day long as happy as a clam. My dad used to love how the beaches were so flat and wide, with little drop off in the water, keeping it shallow for quite a distance. He was able to enjoy being at the beach with us and not worrying about the ocean getting deep with one step. When I became a parent with our first beach trip, I though, yep dad was so right! But there is so much more to Daytona Beach, than well the beach, lots of opportunities for outdoor fun.
For those who want more activity after a bit of lounging on the beach, there are tons of options all close by. Enjoy world-class attractions like Daytona International Speedway or the new Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art, the largest collection of Florida art in the world. Go deep-sea fishing where some of the best bass fishing in Florida is offered, rent everything you need for endless water sports or visit one of Daytona Beach’s many historical sites. At night, choose from a number of Daytona Beach’s fine dining and restaurants, bars or dance clubs.
Did you know Daytona Beach is known as the festival capital of Florida? The area hosts more than 50 festivals throughout the year, and Fall festivals make this one of the best times of the year to visit. The average fall temperatures in Daytona Beach are perfect in the fall to enjoy being outside without being so hot. Next weekend, the Daytona Turkey Run will be held at Daytona International Speedway. A Thanksgiving weekend tradition, with 6000 vintage cars, muscle cars, race cars and trucks for show and sale, this event is the largest classic car show in the United States. Bargain hunters the weekend also showcases a huge swap meet, along with Artisan Alley food and entertainment. My car buff husband would love to see so many cars!
If cars are not your thing, check out the other Fall Festivals offered because like the town itself, there is a festival for everyone to enjoy :
- Art lovers, be sure to attend the Halifax Art Festival in scenic downtown
- Like a bit of dancing and tasty gyros, don’t miss the Greek Festival.
- During the Daytona Blues Festival, you’ll enjoy a top-notch line-up for blues greats performing at historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
- Bikers can find daily live music during Biketoberfest® at Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona motorcycle-themed shopping and entertainment complex.
