Read to Your Kids a Whole New Way with Incredebooks and Disney Imagicademy Review and Giveaway

December 4, 2015 by Julie @RunWalkRepeat

Disclosure: I received a copy of Olaf Wants a Birthday from Incredebooks and Disney Imagicademy for review and giveaway. All thoughts are 100% my own.

Incredebooks review

Ready to bring books to life?  Get more out of your story time with “connected story books” from Incredebooks and Disney Imagicademy. In Olaf Wants a Birthday with the help of your mobile device,  this “connected story books” offers a fun new way to read and experience traditional story books. Along with reading a story, Olaf comes to life in 3D using your mobile device via free Disney Incredbooks app.

There are two new Disney books available for the first time this holiday season from Incredebooks and Disney Imagicademy—exclusively at Target retail stores in the toy department and at Target.com (SRP:$14.99):

  •  Olaf Wants a Birthday, featuring Olaf, the lovable snowman from Disney’s Frozen, spoiler alert, cute story!
  • Mickey and Donald’s Rhyme Time, starring characters from Disney’s Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

These story books are designed to fuel your child’s love of learning with rhyme, rhythm, and language. The books feature beautiful illustrations and rhyming verse. You get a traditional bonding experience from reading to your child or having them read to you, book itself stands on its own. I loved how the story could be  taken to the next level with enhanced digitally augmented reality technology allowing you to:

  • Take a photo with Olaf (or Mickey depending on your book)
  • Change viewpoints by zooming in and out — and rotating the 3D story scenes 360 degrees
  • Explore four digital experiences reinforcing early language skills
  • Tap objects to trigger animations and funny rhymes
  • Engage in playful rhyming games and activities

Here’s a video on how it works:

Incredebooks: Disney Edition from Incredebooks on Vimeo.

We received Olaf Wants a Birthday, where everyone’s favorite summer loving snowman discovers all the fun things he could do if he celebrated birthdays like friends Anna and Elsa. He imagines skating parties, games of tag, birthday flowers, walks with friends, songs and yes of course a day at the beach – good thing he has his perpetual snow cloud!  My daughter age 9 read the book to me and described it as  a sweet story about a snowman who loves life and birthday celebrations, with a “I love like birthdays too”.  She enjoyed playing with the app, sure she is a little old for a picture book, but there are some fun little games. The virtual reality aspect and 3D on the app is quite amazing – the depth perception is incredible. I enjoyed playing with it too – who doesn’t love seeing Olaf come to life. My daughter can’t wait to read it to all her younger cousins and neighbors. This is a great vehicle for her to share her love of books and learning with younger friends, now there is a win/win.

A couple screenshots from my phone of the app – and yes, the little cloud over Olaf actively snows and moves with him. As you move your phone around, the graphics on the screen adjust, to your point of view.

As a former preschool teacher, I can attest to the learning power of these books and the Incredebooks app which help children develop reading foundation skills through:

  • Recognizing rhymes and non-rhymes
  • Listening to and matching rhyming word pairs
  • Reading and matching rhyming word pairs

The app is very simple to use, here is how it works:

  • Just download the included Apple or Android companion app through iTunes or Google Play.
  • As you read the story, find the special symbols on the special book pages.
  • Activate the special pages in 3D with your mobile device!

To be clear, the app is free and there is no charge to use with your Incredebook story book.

The books, for children ages 3–8, created by Mercury Connects and published by Mercury InPress, and developed with Disney Imagicademy, a division of Disney Learning. Other Incredebooks (non Disney) include The Funny Fables series based on iconic children’s fables, including Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks and The Three Little Pigs. Featuring delightful and original illustrations with reimagined story lines for today’s young readers, Mercury Connects has transformed these timeless classics into fully immersive experiences. (SRP: $11.99, available at Target.com in specially priced 2-Packs).

We loved Olaf and while I haven’t seen Mickey Mouse, I know in our Hot Dog Dance days, my daughter would have LOVED it.
